Best places to watch the sunset in Bergen!

Find our favourite spots watching the glorious summer sunsets in Bergen, Norway. Enjoy late evenings watching the sun set over the beautiful islands west of Bergen.

When is the sunset in Bergen?

Summer in Bergen equals long days, with the sun setting as late as 23:15 on the longest day and rising at 4am (although in reality it doesn’t actually reach complete darkness at all!) And with all this extra daylight comes extra time for barbequing, swimming, and of course hanging out at some of our favourite spots watching the glorious summer sunsets.

However in wintertime the sun sets at 15:30 on the shortest day. So be prepared for early sunsets!

1. Sunset at Fløyen

Fløyen may seem like an obvious choice, but it’s definitely popular for a reason. Taking about an hour from the city centre, this hike has asphalt paths the whole way up; making it a fairly easy hike. There is also a funicular, so if you don’t feel like walking you can take the Fløibanen up and/or down the mountain. The Fløibanen leaves every 15 minutes and is open until 11pm.  The trip up the mountain is beautiful both by foot and funicular, and once you’re up the top you’ll have a panoramic view over the whole of Bergen!

2. Sunset at Bergenhus festning

If you’re looking for an option even closer to the city centre, the top of Bergenhus Festning (the Bergen fortress) is a fantastic place for a picnic! And has perhaps the best view over Sandviken that you’ll find in Bergen!

3. Sunset in Nordnesparken

Just a short walk from the city centre you will find Nordnesparken. With public grills, excellent bathing spots, and plenty of grass area for picnics Nordnesparken is a fantastic choice for a summer evening.

4. Sunset at Verftet

Located very near to Nordnesparken, you’ll also find Verftet! Known as the home to Bergens largest concert venue, USF Verftet, you’ll also find a café, swimming spots, and a glorious view over the western city mountains.

5. Sunset at Bryggen

We love watching the sunset over the colourful houses of Bryggen! Take a seat at one of the Bryggen cafes, or find a spot on one of the public seating areas nearby. The little jetty near to Fisketorget, for example, is the perfect place to sit and watch the boats go by.

6. Sunset at Ulriken

If you’re feeling a tad more adventurous, why not take a trip up to the highest of the Bergen city mountains to watch the sunset. And with the Ulriken cable car up and running again you don’t have to worry about the long, dark walk down. (Just make sure you don’t miss the last cable car down).

7. Sunset at Skutevikskaien – Skuteviken wharf

Just under 1km from Bryggen you’ll find Skutevikskaien, (Skuteviken wharf), This is an easy walk from Bryggen, or just a few stops by bus. Here you can view the sunset from the water’s edge, next to cozy old se houses with a view across the fjord to Askøy.
