Ice Halls and Skating Rinks
Bergen has four artificial ice rinks, indoor and outdoor:
Pop – Up ice rinks
When conditions permit, Bergen Municipality ices several rinks at various locations, including tennis courts and other areas. The rinks are prepared when there is sufficient capacity. The Stemmemyren tennis court, near NHH, is typically iced when there is a prolonged cold period.
Skating Lakes
Lake ice is considered safe to skate on when it’s at least 15 cm thick. With Bergen’s temperate climate, it rarely get cold enough for lakes to freeze so that they are safe to skate on.
Occasionally though, there are cold spells which last long enough to create the perfect ice skating conditions.
Remember that you always walk on the ice at your own risk! Just because you see other people on a lake, it doesn’t mean that the ice is safe.
Skansedammen
On the way up to Mount Fløyen you will find Skansedammen. This is a shallow water that easily freezes over.
With a fantastic view over the fjord and the mountains, this is a very special place to skate!
Find out if the ice is safe
You yourself is responsible for making sure that the ice is safe to skate on. It should be at least 15 cm of blue ice. Never go out on the ice by yourself and familiarize yourself with ice safety.
You can find more info about Ice safety on Varsom.no (only in Nowegian, use a translater)
Rent skates and equipment
Many people don’t often ice skate, and feel it’s unnecessary to own their own pair of skates. You may rent skates at some of the bigger artificial Ice rinks.
But if you’re going to skate on one of the lakes, you can borrow skating equipment completely free.
