Free concert for students: Experience Ragnhild Hemsing and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra
Bring your friends along for an evening of beautiful and spectacular music at Grieghallen – completely free! You don’t need to know anything about classical music beforehand. Experience the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and internationally acclaimed violinist Ragnhild Hemsing in a programme ranging from new music inspired by Norwegian folk traditions to Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 11.
Ragnhild Hemsing plays both the Hardanger fiddle and violin in the world premiere of Ørjan Matre’s new concerto. Here, Norwegian folk music meets contemporary music, as traditional rhythms and harmonies are brought to life by the orchestra.
After the interval, you’ll enter a completely different world: Dmitri Shostakovich and his powerful and expressive Symphony No. 11. The music tells the story of a dramatic day in St Petersburg in 1905, when peaceful demonstrators were shot by the Tsar’s soldiers. It begins in a dark and ominous mood as the crowd gathers in the cold square, before gunshots shatter the silence, followed by deeply mournful music. The symphony is often described as a film score without a film.
Shostakovich’s symphony was premiered in 1957. Exactly how the work should be interpreted remains unclear. Did he write the symphony as a tribute to the Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union, or was it instead a protest against the oppression and violence of the Soviet regime?
Free admission exclusively for students
You don’t need to know anything about classical music in advance. Just come as you are and experience the concert.
The concert is free for students at the University of Bergen (UiB), Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Norwegian School of Economics (NHH), BI Norwegian Business School, VID Specialized University, NLA University College, Kristiania University College and Fagskulen Vestland. Valid student ID will be checked at the entrance.
